Last year, the world’s first rollable Oppo X2121 was unveiled at the Oppo Stage. But this year, at the DSCC 2022 Business Conference yesterday, Samsung unveiled a new rollable display design for smartphones called “slideables”.
The news came from Rose Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) via Twitter, and in his recent tweets, Mr Young shared several photos of Samsung’s showcase of the new slideable display at the conference.
Samsung calls the design a vertical slide-out design, as it is a compact 16: 9 smartphone display that allows the smartphone to easily fit in your pocket as a display in normal use. However, if you want more screen real estate, the display can then be expanded to a 6.7-inch 22: 9 AMOLED display, which slides upwards.
This 22: 9 aspect ratio is great when users are scrolling through Twitter and Instagram or reading an article online, as your screen now has more content compared to a 16: 9 display, which allows the user to be more productive.
Another advantage is that you now have a larger screen of 6.7 inches in your pocket, which is slimmer than it would have been if you had not used any of the folding or sliding techniques.
From the screen shots taken by Mr. Young, it seems that the slideable technology on display may be ready for mass production. However, since the smartphone does not belong to the Samsung Z Fold or Z Flip family, Samsung may create a new Samsung Galaxy Z slide series when it decides that it wants to further diversify its non-traditional smartphone portfolio.
