Following the release of Android 12 on October on the latest Google Pixel devices, the TV version of Android 12 has finally come out of beta testing.
On November 30th, the official release of Android TV 12 was announced for the developers, indicating that it will be live on your smart TVs soon.
New Features of Android TV 12
It focuses on improving user interface components when viewing the interface on 4K TVs. Until now, the main interface was only rendered in 1080p, and when you select something to watch, it switches to 4K, making it a bit “lag”.
The new update brings a new background blur “to easily enhance the visual separation of different UI layers”. There is also a new upgrade rate adjustment for a “smoother viewing experience”. Apps can check playback settings and change frame rates based on what they see. Google also includes support for HDMI CEC 2.0.
Another important feature that comes with this new update is related to privacy control. Google now implements the microphone and camera gestures that appear on TVs. These are the same indicators found on smartphones when using an app camera or microphone. These are the same indicators found on smartphones when using an app camera or microphone. This feature is for those who do not always want their microphone or connected camera to be active, giving them full control over it.
Beyond Google’s announcements, there are a few minor changes to Android TV and Google TV that come with Android 12. The biggest of these is the “Quick Connect” feature. Available under the “Network, Internet” section, Quick Connect for Android TV generates a QR code that can be scanned by mobile users.
The scanned code on the phone leads you to the Android TV’s Wi-Fi connection page, which allows users to manage text input from their mobile phone.
If you want to try out Android TV 12, you need an ADT-3, Google’s Development Box for the platform. The update for manual download is available here.
Unfortunately, there is no information about this update in Google’s Chromecast dongle, which still runs on Android TV OS 10, and has not seen any updates for a few months.
