Leaked speed test for Jio 5G reveals that the network can achieve 420 Mbps download speeds and 412 Mbps upload speeds. It has a very low latency, just 11 ms and an average of 9 ms.
While not close to the theoretical speed and latency of 5G, it’s a good start, and even surpasses the average global 5G download speed, which has recently dropped to around 166 Mbps. This information is obtained from a screenshot shared by a pilot tester on 91 mobiles.
Compared to 4G, 5G download speeds are about 20 times faster, which means your 4K movie downloads take just a few minutes. Real world performance will be different from these controlled pilot test results when 5G is actually released – but now we can be surprised at that triple digit speed.
According to the Department of Telecom (DoT), when it comes to rollouts, 5G in India is expected to reach 13 metro cities by the end of this year. Jio seems to be ahead of the competition and recently announced the completion of 5G rollout plans in 1,000 cities across the country.
Earlier last year, Jio was able to reach speeds of up to 1 Gbps as part of 5G field tests. These are performed because the operator has complete control over the situation, so users should not expect to see Gbps-class speeds at any time. Additionally, Gbps speed can only be achieved when using network millimeter-wave (MMwave) spectrum, which currently does not seem to be what any telecom provider would like.
Current 5G implementations seem to favor distance over speed, utilizing sub-6 GHz frequencies, which can reach hundreds of Mbps peaks, and cover even wider coverage areas. Airtel and Vi will launch their 5G networks in India with Jio in late 2022 and early 2023.
