Intel has made their in-house RealSense ID Facial Recognition that uses RealSense depth-sensing technology official. From a humble beginning as a medium for touch-free interaction for the camera the technology has evolved greatly.
According to the company, it uses, a neural network with the combination of a dedicated SoC to process the user data securely. The device is taught to study and adapt its sensing as the time passes learning to differentiate and correctly identify the various facial hair designs and skin tones. It is designed as a standalone product that can be connected to computers or as a companion that can be integrated into other products.
In addition to the previous use cases like Windows Hello, Intel claims the RealSense ID can now be used to recognise people at ATMs or in smart lockers. It is unclear how effective these systems will turn out to be thanks to the widespread life-saving use of masks. Intel says, “We’ve done extensive data collection of all ethnicities from Asia, Europe, Middle East Africa,”.
The RealSense ID peripheral is now available for $99 and the module as a pack of 10 is available for 750 for pre-order. Both the modules will start shipping in March.
