Google announced on Wednesday at its I/O 2022 customer keynote a series of updates aimed at Wear OS and Android tablets, designed to upgrade user experience across devices, not just phones.
One of the most important updates to Wear OS is the quick access to Emergency SOS. Google is also bringing Google Assistant support for smartwatches. Additionally, Android-based tablets receive updated Google apps. Google has introduced an updated Google Wallet on Android to support things like payment cards, transit, event tickets, and student IDs.
Bringing Emergency SOS to Wear OS, Google allows its users to instantly contact their loyal family members or call directly from their smartwatch to the emergency services. The Mountain View Company said it was working with various partners to enable this feature.
Google also talked about the Emergency Location Services (ELS) feature, which is designed to help find first responders when you call for help in the event of a medical emergency or natural disaster. In addition to ELS, Google has early earthquake warnings in 25 countries and is preparing to expand to “many other high-risk areas around the world.”
Google announced in I / O 2022 that it was bringing the Google Assistant to Samsung Galaxy watches, in addition to Wear OS. It will be available in the Galaxy Watch 4 series soon. The Google Assistant experience in Wear OS can be used to access natural voice interactions and features such as voice-controlled navigation or reminder setup.
Google is bringing more apps to Wear OS. Apps like SoundCloud and Deezer will make their debut on Wear OS-based smartwatches later this year. Apps including Adidas Running, Spotify, Line and KakaoTalk have already received significant updates to provide a better experience.
In the 2021 I / O keynote, Google announced its partnership with Samsung, under which Tizen will integrate with Wear OS. The company showed the positivity of that move by saying that it now has Wear OS devices that are three times more active than last year. However, the exact number of active Wear OS users has not yet been revealed.
Google has announced on the I/O 2022 keynote that it will be updating more than 20 Google apps for tablets over the next few weeks to take full advantage of the extra screen space. These include YouTube Music, Google Maps and Messages.
