AMD has finally succeeded in making the desktop APUs that match the performance of mobile APUs. The new Ryzen 4000G Series APUs aims to compete with the company’s mobile APUs as they are receiving major upgrades. AMD has decided to replace Zen+ cores with the latest are more powerful Zen 2 chipsets based on 7 nm architecture. These are the same chipsets seen on mobile APUs.
The jump from Zen+ to Zen 2 cores will bring a major overhaul as the 4000G series will offer up to 2.5x faster multi-threaded performance compared to the 3200G and 3400G, which were using the older Zen+ cores When we compare Ryzen 4000G with the Intel Core i7-9700, it offers up to 5% better single-threaded and up to 31% multi-threaded performance, based on Cinebench benchmarking tests.
Speaking about the cores in Ryzen 4000G Series, they range from quad-core to octa-core arrangement. These new cores will also be equipped with hyperthreading for improved performance. There will be a “GE” version that has a 35 W TDP instead of 65 W for each Ryzen 4000G APU along with turbo clock speeds.
AMD has also outdone Intel by manufacturing better budget GPUs. The new Radeon GPU faster than the basic Intel GPUs by up to 202%. We are comparing the UHD Graphics 630 inside the Intel i7-9700 with the AMD Radeon 3400G with the help of 3DMark Time Spy benchmarks. The AMD Ryzen 4000G APUs have eight PCIe 3.0 lane, matching their mobile counterparts.
Now let us see the catch if you want to grab a machine with the new AMD Ryzen 4000G APUs. They are presently available in pre-built systems from OEMs like Dell and HP. These will not be available in stores for individual purchase as of now. But AMD will bring it straight-to-consumers “soon”. If you have a 500-series motherboard, these should work fine.
AMD has not revealed any details about its pricing. The 4000G series is also getting Pro versions like every other piece of technology these days. These are meant for businesses and comes with memory encryption, OS image stability over 18 months, guaranteed availability for 24 months, and stricter QA. With the introduction of new Ryzen 4000G APUs AMD has made Zen+ cheaper and it is now used in Athlon APUs.
