After going through a lot of leaks and rumors, Apple has finally unveiled the iPhone 14 series today. As we all know this is the most awaited smartphone we wait every year for. This will be the first iPhone series post Covid pandemic, which means the units won’t face issues related to chip shortage which it faced a bit in 2020. So users are anticipating that they won’t up the prices like last 2 years. This year total 4 models are launched, but with slight change in naming. So without further ado, let’s get to know about the iPhone 14 series.
iPhone 14/14 Plus:
Starting off with the original model, the iPhone 14. This is the cheapest iPhone launched today. So no Mini model this time. And to compensate, Apple has launched iPhone 14 Plus this year. This is nothing but a bigger version of regular iPhone 14 model (just like Pro and Pro Max models).
The iPhone 14 comes with a 6.1 Inch Super Retina XDR OLED Display with Full HD+ (1170×2532) resolution. Whereas the iPhone 14 Plus comes with 6.7 Inch Super Retina XDR OLED Display with Full HD+ (1284×2778) resolution. Both supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision, with the help of up to 1,000 nits peak brightness. For protection, there’s scratch resistant ceramic glass and oleophobic coating.
Sadly both has last year’s A15 Bionic processor. Seems like this time Apple is restricting A16 Bionic for Pro models. A pretty sad cost cutting because this year we got slight relief from chip shortages. But no worries because the A15 Bionic is still the 2nd most powerful chipset after A16 Bionic. It’s a Hexa-core CPU with 6-core Apple GPU. Both phones have 128/256/512GB of internal storage options. Both comes with iOS 16 out of the box.
In terms of camera, it’s mostly same as last year. There’s a 12MP main sensor with f1.6 aperture, 1.7mm sensor size, dual pixel PDAF, and sensor-shift OIS. Then there’s 12MP ultrawide angle sensor with f1.8 aperture and 120 degree lens. Both camera can shoot videos up to 4K at 60fps with HDR, Dolby Vision HDR, and stereo sound recording. Also 1080p slow motion videos at 240fps. On front there’s another 12MP sensor with f2.2 aperture and autofocus. As always it also has 3D Depth and Biometric sensor.
For connectivity, the iPhone 14 series will become first commercial smartphone to have SOS Satellite connectivity through which we can connect emergency calls without SIM card or eSIM, from anywhere. Other connectivity options are loads of 5G bands, 4G, VoLTE, GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, and sadly the lightning port. There’s stereo speakers as well. It comes in Black, Blue, Purple, White and (Product) RED color options.
iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max:
Now let’s look at the Pro models. The most noticeable change here is the pill sized notch. The design might be subjective to personal taste here, but at least we got something different from the notch Apple is giving from years. Here I won’t let you go through all the specs as above, just mentioning the different specs.
Both iPhone 14 Pro models comes with same displays as iPhone 14 & 14 Plus, except for refresh rate. Just like last year, the Pro models supports the 120Hz refresh rate, keeping it a premium feature. Also, the peak brightness here is 1,200 nits, peak HDR brightness of 1,600 nits, and peak outdoor brightness at whooping 2,000 nits.
The Pro models comes with latest Apple A16 Bionic processor. It’s a 4nm processed chipset with 8-core GPU. It has new Display Engine for some incredible display management throughout multiple scenarios like gaming, content watching, etc. Both comes with
Regarding camera, the Pro models got the biggest hardware change in years. Now the main sensor is a 48MP sensor with quad binning technology. Apple claims it to be a huge upgrade in terms of details, contrast, etc. It has dual pixel PDAF and sensor-shift OIS. Then there’s 12MP Telephoto lens with up to 3X optical zoom, PDAf, and OIS. Lastly, the 12MP Ultrawide sensor with same 120 degree lens but bigger 1.4mm lens size. It can record videos up 8K at 30fps, and 4K at 60fps with 10-bit HDR, Dolby Vision HDR, ProRes, Cinematic Mode, and Stereo Sound Recording support. On front it’s the same 12MP sensor as regular iPhone 14.
Connectivity options are the same, just there’s the latest Bluetooth 5.3 support. All other features are same as iPhone 14. It comes in Black, Silver, Gold, and Deep Purple color options.

So these are the new iPhone 14 series smartphones from Apple. Again like every year, most of the things are just minor upgrades and if you own iPhone 13 or even iPhone 12 series smartphone, then there’s no need to upgrade unless you want to move from iPhone 12 Mini to iPhone 14 Pro. But honestly, I feel it was high time that Apple should bring Type-C port. If iPhone 14 series, or just the Pro versions would have Type-C port, this would be one of the bestselling iPhones ever.
